It’s that time of year where the Good Food Guide seek out the best local restaurants

CAN YOU HELP US? WE WOULD LOVE TO BE IN THE RUNNING FOR BEST LOCAL RESTAURANT 2024.

The Good Food Guide has been a staple for the foodies out there since it was first compiled by Raymond Postgate in 1951. Appalled by the British post-war dining experience, Postgate recruited an army of volunteers to inspect restaurants anonymously and report back. His aims were simple; among them, ‘to raise the standard of cooking in Britain’ and ‘to do ourselves all a bit of good by making our holidays, travels and evenings-out in due course more enjoyable’.

Although much has changed since the very first edition of The Good Food Guide, the ethos of the original book remains. The Guide is about empowering diners, helping readers to find the very best places to eat and encouraging restaurants to offer the best possible food, service and experience.

We were really thrilled to be included in the Guide from quite early on in our restaurant life when we opened in winter 2021, and every year they seek to find the Best Local Restaurants in the UK. This is broken down into regions, and they reach their shortlists by asking for people to nominate their favourites. After this, anonymous judges travel the country and pick their winners, and also crown an overall winner. Last year we were absolutely floored to get the call saying we had been crowned the best in the North East, and that is all thanks to the many amazing nominations that came in from you guys!

So here is where I ask for your help again! We would love to defend our title, so if you have been to visit us and enjoyed your experience, would you consider NOMINATING US?

The judges are looking for restaurants that are:

  • Independently run; owned by the chef or a hands-on proprietor
  • Offer regularly changing, seasonal menus at affordable prices
  • Demonstrate strong relationships with local suppliers
  • Rooted in the local community
  • Offer at least two dinner services a week
  • Give customers a genuine, warm welcome

The nomination form will ask for the restaurant name, and also our address, which is Homestead Kitchen, Prudom House, Goathland, North Yorkshire, YO22 5AN.

A few of you who have already nominated have shared their submissions with me, and it honestly brought so much happiness to us to know that we are creating something that people feel so connected with, without the support those who visit us and champion us, we simply wouldn’t be here, so THANK YOU.
