The Homestead Kitchen is more than just a restaurant for us, it’s a passion, a place for us to really bring alive the things we love and brings us joy. Each ingredient has been carefully thought out and sourced, imagine seeing a map of the North York Moors and surrounding areas, and then seeing all the amazing suppliers, producers and growers popping up, and then all being brought together. Well this is what we have done, from fresh fish landed in Whitby, meat from moorland farms and via our local butcher, breads made with organic flour milled on the moors, organic vegetables grown just a few hours away, and closer to home, vegetables, fruits, flowers and herbs from our very own garden.

Our hope is that the Homestead becomes a space to eat, and drink, and come together. Our menu is ever changing, depending on what is in season, with specials created when our local fisherman arrives at the door with boxes of fresh langoustines, or line caught mackerel, or friends arrive with armfuls of rhubarb.

Over the coming years we hope to create a flourishing and vibrant space, growing our own family, growing on the land, and growing in the community.

Accreditations and Awards

Yorkshire Life Food and Drink Awards 2023

Winner of Restaurant of the Year

This award was extra special as the nomination and trophy came from customers taking time to submit their comments on why they wanted the Homestead Kitchen to be crowned. We are so very grateful for the unwavering support of our fantastic customers.

MICHELIN Guide

In February 2022, just 3 months after opening, The Homestead Kitchen was recommended in the MICHELIN Guide 2022.

They said “Ask for a table at the rear of this attractive stone-built former farmhouse so you can look out over the moors. It’s a small place, with a modern country house style, and is proudly run by two experienced chefs. The menu is concise but has plenty of appeal, with refined dishes crafted from local produce.”

We are really pleased to be able to say we have retained our recommendation in the 2023 guide too.

Good Food Guide

Featured in the Good Food Guide within in our first year, we were thrilled to receive an overall rating of ‘Very Good’ for our uniqueness, deliciousness, warmth and strength of recommendation.

They commented “The short menu showcases the best of Yorkshire produce, illustrated by a beautifully balanced dish of roast beetroot, salad leaves, candied walnuts and local Botton Dairy quark. But it’s not just about local produce, Peter has a clear understanding of ingredients, composition and balance. Smoked haddock from the nearby Yorkshire coast, for example, emerges in a delicate lasagne with a Jerusalem artichoke velouté – a beautifully composed dish that is refined yet restrained.”

Deliciously Yorkshire Awards

We were bowled over to win two awards at the 2022 Deliciously Yorkshire Awards, and are so grateful for the recognition.

Commenting on their decision to give the Homestead the given award for Best Use of Local Produce on a Menu, the judging panel praised Cecily and Peter for their clear connection to the local landscape, their ethos and communication of provenance as well as their dedication to local sourcing which they described as “outstanding”. “From harvesting their own vegetables, to selecting quality local ingredients which are then treated with the utmost care, this respect and simplicity is a winning combination – Yorkshire pride and passion on a plate – Bravo!”

“I’ve been trying to find the right adjective to describe the whole experience of eating at The Homestead Kitchen and I finally realised that it is “exquisite”.
The warm welcome and the beautiful decor made me feel like I’d popped round to a friend’s house for dinner. Obviously a friend with exquisite taste and an eye for understated, subtle and perfect detail.”
“I would give Homestead Kitchen 6/5 if I could, absolutely impeccable food and service. I would go as far as to say it was one of the best lunches I’ve ever had. It was my Mum’s birthday and they made it very special.”
