There isn’t a day goes by that I don’t look out of our windows, across the moors, and feel grateful for being able to put our roots down in such a mesmerising part of the world. I definitely believe that growing up on the North York Moors has had a fundamental effect on my DNA! Returning to my childhood village of Goathland, with my own little family in tow nearly 3 years ago was such a special moment. I spent my childhood exploring the heather covered moors, paddling in the rivers of Beckhole and Darnholm, and using the steam train as the mode of transport to get home from school! There was a time I longed for moving away to somewhere ‘more exciting’, so of course fled to the city for university, and soon realised that my heart belonged to the countryside.
Over the last couple of years, since we have been running the Homestead, I have loved connecting with other like minded businesses, and found such a lovely community through the North York Moors Tourism Network. From our involvement in this, we were really thrilled to be recognised as a ‘Champion’ of the North York Moors, and are part of a select group of businesses who strive to provide the best service and experience. In doing so, we work closely with the National Park and share their ethos of enjoying and looking after the National Park, in equal measures.
One of the many great initiatives run by the NYMNP is Mindful Month in September. This is a great opportunity to explore the many amazing things the area has to offer, as mindfulness can mean so many different things to us as individuals. There is undoubtedly something for everyone, and we encourage you to get involved, i’ll share details to the full list of events at the end of this blog.
So what are we hosting here at the Homestead?
Friday 13th September – from 9.30am
CHARCOAL DRAWING WORKSHOP WITH LUNCH
We are excited to welcome local artist Louise Garrett to guide you through a relaxed session drawing with charcoal. The morning will begin with some warm up drawing exercises, and you will be looking at the marks you make and how to make them. With the knowledge from this, you will move on to creating a still life piece of art! Louise encourages participants to work on fairly large paper (A2 is perfect) and be open to experimentation.
All materials are provided. The session will be using easels and standing up. If you feel like this might be difficult for you, please do get in touch in advance of booking to speak with Louise as there may be adaptations she can suggest.
The workshop will run between 9:30am – 12.00pm, followed by a 2 course lunch.

SOCIAL WALK WITH LUNCH
Our popular social walk is back after a short summer break. These walks have become something of an institution, a chance to connect both with nature and other people. We meet at the restaurant for 9.30am and have teas, coffees and pastries, setting off on the walk at around 10am. I just love that every month brings together a different group of people, and it makes my heart sing hearing the snippets of chats, the community, the coming together, and we have seen new friendships blossom. Following our 2 hour stomp on the moors, we return to a 2 course lunch and glass of wine (all included in the price).

WATERCOLOUR PAINTING WORKSHOP WITH LUNCH
We have hosted Ione’s moorland inspired watercolour painting workshops for a little while now, and it is just wonderful to see the beautiful pieces of art that everyone creates. In this workshop, you will explore how to paint expressive watercolour landscapes that capture the atmosphere and mood of a scene. With an emphasis on fun and exploration, this workshop is suitable for all levels – whether you are a complete beginner or already paint but want to loosen up your style and paint in a, literally, more fluid way. All materials are provided – as is lunch and refreshments!
